India’s first and only AV screen manufacturer, Lumina Screens, is proving that cutting-edge technology and homegrown innovation can coexist. This is the story of how its relentless R&D journey is reshaping the AV landscape.
In a country where most premium AV screens have been imported, Lumina Screens set out with a bold mission—to design and manufacture world-class projection screens, tailored for Indian homes, theatres, and professional spaces. But bringing this vision to life wasn’t just about setting up a factory; it was about building a culture of innovation from the ground up.
The Case for R&D in India’s AV Industry
Indian consumers and professionals are becoming increasingly discerning about their audio-visual experiences. From home theatres in urban apartments to professional AV installations, the demand for screens that deliver superior picture quality in diverse lighting and space conditions has never been higher.
Yet, until recently, there was no Indian manufacturer offering the technology and precision to meet these expectations. This gap led Lumina to invest significantly in research and development—an approach that now defines the brand’s commitment.
“We knew we couldn’t just replicate what the global players were doing. India has its unique challenges—ambient light, compact living spaces, and diverse projector types. Our R&D had to address these realities head-on,” says Yusuf Galabhaiwala, Director of Operations at Lumina Screens.
Inside Lumina’s Innovation Engine
The R&D team at Lumina spent years prototyping, testing, and refining screen fabrics and frames. Here’s a peek behind the curtain:
- Leor UST – Developed for ultra-short throw projectors, Leor UST eliminates image distortion and hotspots, a common issue in tight urban spaces.
- Accupix – An acoustic transparent fabric that allows speakers to be placed behind the screen without compromising sound clarity or picture quality.Â
- Color Pro White – A specially engineered surface that delivers neutral color reproduction, balancing brightness and contrast even in rooms with ambient light.Â
Each product underwent rigorous testing—brightness retention, color uniformity, sound permeability, and compatibility with leading projector brands. The result is a range of screens designed and engineered to deliver flawless performance in real-world conditions.
Challenges Along the Way
Innovation was never easy. The team had to ensure that every material and component worked flawlessly with their precision manufacturing processes. Another hurdle was ensuring compatibility with a growing variety of projectors in the Indian market—from budget-friendly models to high-end laser systems.
Shaping the Future: What’s Next for Lumina
Lumina’s R&D vision doesn’t stop here. The company is exploring AI-driven screen matching technology that automatically suggests the best screen type based on room size, projector specs, and lighting conditions.
Custom-engineered screens for large-format venues and next-generation fabrics with enhanced ambient light rejection are also in the pipeline.
“Our goal is to not just catch up with the global brands, but to set benchmarks in screen technology from India to the world,” adds Abhishek Badave, Business Development Executive at Lumina Screens.
Redefining What’s Possible
From the first prototype to full-scale production, Lumina Screens’ journey is a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets determination. With a growing network of AV dealers, integrators, and end customers, Lumina is fast becoming a name synonymous with quality, technology, and trust.
As India embraces smarter living spaces and professional AV installations, Lumina Screens stands ready—not just as a manufacturer, but as a true innovator.
